Topic: Hero - Communist Propaganda? Posted: 2004-08-29 @ 12:49:06 First off, let me say this one small point of information:
I loved the original movie "Hero" that was released internationaly over a year ago. It was a great movie about the history of China, with fight scenes that rival those of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Yes, it was in subtitles, but it was worth it.
I found out recently, that QT, the producer of such movies (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Jackie Brown, Resevoir Dogs, ...Pulp Fiction), was "Presenting" the movie over here in the United States.
First thing that went through my mind was "SHIT", because QT was licensed by Miramax, and I had this bad feeling in my heart that they would try to butcher it, give it bad dubs and then rape the storyline. I later found out that the reason it was "Tarentino Presents: Hero" was because QT stopped Miramax from messing with the original chinese movie that was released over a year ago.
So I happily went to go see the movie.
It was great, it was untouched (except for a few points that I'm going to cover), the story stayed, and the entire movie was in subtitles! Yes! No terrible voice acting in a film made over in China. If you don't beleive me, go buy Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (DVD), its in English. You'll see how much a company can mess up a movie.
Except for one key thing, and it might be a soft spoiler so if you don't want it semi ruined, don't read on (or skip past this part)
Broken Sword wrote in the ground to Nameless, urging him to stop his goal. In the sand he wrote the words "Our Land". In the original DVD and the movie, what Broken Sword wrote to Nameless was "All Under Heaven". Which changes the movies views almost instantly.
"It shows the story of how a Sacrifice of one can benefit the cause as a whole. That the murder of the innocent to reach a goal that will benefit [apparently] everybody is nothing but Communist China propaganda and should be removed from American Movie Theathres"
Now, I've read alot of reviews by people about the movie. Slandering it because it's apparently "Communist China Propaganda" , but if you go to this movie, and you only view it in full, about how it's a Communist Propaganda, then I honestly do not understand why your even went to go see such a work of art.
I mean, since when has History been wrong?
All in all, it's a great movie. Go watch it, you will enjoy it and no matter what happens in the end, or what your views are, you'll be glad you did.(4)Comments
