Topic: [Game] Doom 3

It has z-z-zombies!
After 5+ years of development, delays, hype, and drool, I never expected Doom 3 to be worth it. I expected another first person shooter that had the occasional 'BOO!’ What I expected, and what I got are 2 entirely different things. I got a game that has such amazing atmosphere and attention to detail that I sometimes forget I'm at home sitting in a chair. I got a game that makes me actually fear what’s coming next. I got a game that makes my jaw drop open and literally makes me say ‘wooooow’ on more than one occasion. I got a game that is most definitely not another first person shooter.

There are always a few things expected out of the next big title.
- A new big title must have the best graphics ever seen.
- A new big title must have the best AI ever experienced.
- A new big title must have the best multiplayer ever made.

Of robots, demons, fire, and shadows.
Doom 3's graphics are not only the best ever seen, they are leaps and bounds beyond the best we've ever seen. The promo pics don't do this game justice, there's nothing like seeing it in action. The amazing graphics are complimented so well with the dark atmosphere that you actually get immersed in the experience. Nothing looks as bad ass as a bright red pentagram appearing in front of you, and red lightning shooting from the sky to reveal an enemy for a few seconds before being submerged in complete darkness. Events like this make the game as terrifying as it is beautiful, and it’s god damn beautiful.

Doom 3's actual AI is rather average, but the level design completely makes up for that. For example, most of the time you can run into a room loaded with demons and then run back out the way you came in. They will then follow you out the door, and you can shoot them one at a time to conserve health and ammunition. This trick works for the first few levels, but then the designers drop in a surprise for the gamer. Sometimes when you do this, a demon will break through a wall and attack you from behind! They burst in at you from a room you've already cleared out and thought was safe, and force you to be absolutely on edge while fighting attackers from the back and front.

I'm sure he's hanging around here somewhere.
Multiplayer mode is not the best multiplayer ever made. They've thrown out this requirement and I whole heartedly thank them for it. First person multiplayer hasn't changed very much since the days of Quake. You have teams, you have some nifty mods, and you have more weapons. The concept is always the same, and I find these games to get tired very quickly. Doom 3 has given a minimal multiplayer mode, and decided to make the best damn single player campaign ever conceived instead. The only thing largely lacking in most modern multiplayer games is a co-operative mode, and I’ve heard there is a mod for Doom 3 in the works. When the co-op mod is complete and mostly bug free you will hear a shriek of pure joy coming from yours truly.

People complain that the game is too dark, but you quickly adjust to the darkness and in the end it gives the game a truly terrifying edge. To truly get a great Doom 3 experience, turn out the lights, turn up the surround sound, and play on one of the harder difficulty modes so ever turn might mean your doom. In conclusion, go out and buy Doom 3 right now.

Too dark, just use the flashlight and... OH MY GOD!!!
