Platform: Gamecube
Rating: E
Difficulty: Hard to Impossible.
A wonderful game that almost no one has heard of or knows about, Ikaruga is a 'top-down' perspective shooter more in the vien of 'R-type' than 'Contra'. First off, it is VERY difficult for a lot of people, including the casual gamer and kids who haven't played a shooting game before. It requires precision accuracy and an iron nerve mixed with definate hand-coordanation skills. The beautiful graphics are outdated somewhat, because of the game's Dreamcast roots (Importers should know this by now). However, it is still fairly pretty. Now, Ikaruga has an interesting twist to it's gameplay. The 'polarity' gimmick, which is where opposite polarities kill you, while matching polarities give you energy to charge up to unleash as missles. When you attack a ship that is a white pol, and you are white, it does normal damage. BUT, if you attack a white pol ship with a black pol, then you do double damage. However, if you are of different polarity, and you get hit by it's bullet, you lose a life. Music is nice, and plays like an orchestra. A combo system is implimented, where if you kill three enimies of the same polarity in a row, it's a combo. The number of points you get depends on how high your combo chain is. Break the chain, and you start over again. Overall short, with only 5 'levels', but there are some unlockables. In my opinion, it's worth a pickup. Oh, and an interesting thing. If you have a 'vertical screen', or a TV that can be turned on it's side without danger of a fire, you can play the game in a full screen perspective, which is simply breathtaking. If this game wasn't so f#%&ing difficult, it would have a MUCH larger appeal.
